Meet Abigail Chadburn, Mitchells’ new undergraduate placement.

Each year Mitchells Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers takes on an undergraduate placement as part of our team, enabling them to gain valuable industry experience and knowledge.

Our latest recruit is Sheffield Hallam University undergraduate Abigail Chadburn from Todwick near Sheffield. Abigail is currently studying Forensic Accountancy. Here, Abigail shares her experience of finding a placement and how the reality of the workplace compares to University.

“It was on my mind through the first years of university that doing a placement was something that I wanted to do. I didn’t have to, but I knew that it would really help gain vital experience in the workplace, contribute to my CV and help me in my studies. When I came for the interview at Mitchells everyone was so friendly to me. I was interviewed by Dan Morris, a Client Manager in Corporate Services, and Andrew McDaid one of the partners.

“They went through what Mitchells did and everything that I’d need to know. Andrew (McDaid) was really friendly as well, he went through my CV with me and worked out whether I’d suit the placement. All that was left after that was an Excel test to make sure I know how to handle spreadsheets. I knew Mitchells would be a fantastic place to work as everyone was so friendly. They mentioned that if they liked me, they would consider hiring me after I finished my studies, and that really attracted me to working at Mitchells.

“In the past six months, I’ve been working with the corporate team. Everything that I do is really contributing to my learning and understanding of the business and financial world. On a regular basis, I’m trusted with doing bank analysis, VAT returns and the management of corporate accounts. Forecasting is also something that I do on a regular basis. This requires me to look at trends within a company and produce a set of accounts based on the trends that have been identified in order to assist a company gain access to finance.

“I’ve learnt so much in the past six months. I was surprised at how much of a step-up it is from A levels to university and then to the real world. You have to learn and remember how to use software and all the details of the work. I have learnt far more at Mitchells already than I have in my courses. With this diverse work load, I have gained so much real life experience.

“The advice I’d give to anyone who wants to get a placement is to apply to as many places as possible, but don’t look at the location or how much they’re offering you. The thing you need to concentrate on is the experience they are going to give you and what you know you are going to benefit from and enjoy.

“Once I’ve finished my placement, I’m going back to university to finish off my degree in forensic accountancy. After that I would love to come back to Mitchells…if they’ll have me of course!.”
