National Insurance Voluntary Contributions – Deadline is Approaching
There’s a key deadline for voluntary national insurance contributions approaching and it’s important to understand what this means and decide if you need to take any action.
You only have until 5 April 2025 to fill any gaps in your National Insurance record from April 2006 to March 2018.
You can usually only make voluntary National Insurance contributions for the previous 6 years. The government extended this window so that you can currently make contributions dating back to 2006, but only for a limited time, ending on 5 April 25. After that date the 6 years limit will apply.
The extension ensures that you don’t miss out on the possibility of receiving your full State Pension entitlement and qualifying for certain contribution-based benefits. Several groups of people may benefit from this extension:
- Employed with low earnings – if you were employed but had low earnings for a period and didn’t pay National Insurance contributions.
- Unemployed and not claiming benefits – if you were not employed and didn’t claim benefits during certain periods.
- Self-employed with small profits – if you were self-employed and didn’t pay contributions due to small profits.
- Living or working outside the UK – if you lived or worked outside the UK for a period and didn’t make contributions during that time.
The first step is to check whether you have any gaps in by checking your Personal Tax account. You may have already received credit for some years that you were not working, for example if you had children under 12 and claimed Child Benefit.
Before making any payments, you should ensure that filling gaps in your record will benefit you. Paying voluntary contributions doesn’t always increase your State Pension. You should review your State Pension forecast and you can also consult with the Future Pension Centre to determine if you would benefit from making the voluntary contributions.
The way you pay your voluntary contributions depends on your circumstances and whether you are employed, self-employed, living in the UK or living abroad.
The extension of the voluntary National Insurance contributions deadline provides a valuable opportunity. By taking the time to review and fill older gaps in your National Insurance record, can help to safeguard your State Pension entitlement for when you retire.
